QC signs an agreement for an economic empowerment program
QC’s Income-Generating Projects in Bosnia
More than 100 benefiting families in the first half of this year
Through its office in Bosnia, QC has implemented several income-generating projects which benefited more than 100 families in the first half of this year. The projects included distributing dairy cattle, farming sheep, bees’ hives, fruit trees, and strawberry seedlings. Bosnian officials greatly appreciated and admired this year’s projects.
QC's office also signed an agreement with the Ministry of Social and Emigrants’ Affairs to mutually finance the coming economic empowerment projects. QC will implement greenhouses’ projects, provide the farmers with farming tools, and plant the wide land areas with fruit trees.
These projects are important because they aim at relieving the poor families in the targeted areas (in the east of Bosnia where unemployment rates are high, and job opportunities are rare). QC wants to encourage the people to depend on themselves by offering them good jobs with monthly salaries; this will help them to generate their income without depending on financial aids. Thus, once the project is ready, many poor families in Bosnia are expected to have better income.
QC's economic empowerment projects have an essential and positive role in the lives of the target families and the society as a whole. Such projects will empowers decrease internal emigration and empower villages in their regions by offering them the needed means of production to financially depend on themselves. The community leaders, too, desire the implementation of these projects.
Continuous Efforts
QC has been working in Bosnia since 1994; it has helped in more than 110,000,000 QR and has regularly sponsored around 2,116 orphans, 78 needy families, 164 students, and 10 Huffaz (who memorize the Holy Qur’an). It also tries to implement the important and necessary projects for the target families, and the society.
Bosnia is one of the European countries which suffered the aftermath of the war between 1992 and 1995. The war destroyed everything, including the factories and companies, leading Bosnia to poverty, and 40% unemployment rate – the highest unemployment rate in Europe. This resulted in huge economic and social problems which led to the country’s instability and the people’s emigration both internally and externally. Although Bosnia has ample pastures which could bring in great income for the families, poverty hinders its development.
QC launches ‘Travel and Aid’ travel website
Qatar Charity has launched a travel website which works to promote participation in charitable work.
The site is the first of its kind in the region and provides a creative and innovative way for people to donate to relief and development programs and projects online.
The site was developed and is managed by QC and enables the public to support humanitarian projects across the world, simply by booking hotels and airline tickets.
A special ceremony marked the launch of the project, attended by QC CEO Yusuf Bin Ahmed Al Kuwari and Executive Director of Support Affairs, Mohammed Abdullah Al Yazidi.
In a speech made at the ceremony, Al Kuwari said: “Qatar Charity has a strong history of supporting and launching quality and creative initiatives and projects in humanitarian work that engage societies, individuals and institutions in charitable and volunteer work, investing in technology and the rapid development in the areas of communication and the Internet in order to promote and finance relief and development programs and projects for the benefit of those in need around the world, and is always eager to facilitate the donation process.”
Kuwari called on companies and institutions that operate in the travel and tourism fields to coordinate with the site and sign agreements with them in order to contribute to encouraging the community to donate to charitable projects across the world. He also urged the community to use the site whenever they need to travel.
He expressed the hope that the site will contribute to widening the culture of charitable work, allowing the largest number of people possible to do good in an easy way, stressing that every contribution can make a difference in helping make the world a better place.
A special presentation entitled ‘Travel and donate’, outlined the simple steps to booking through the website, which are as follows:
· Access the site at travelandaid.com via your computer browser or smartphone
· Find and compare between airlines and hotels.
· Complete your purchase and the airline and hotel will donate a percentage of the price for the benefit of charitable projects.
The supported browser ‘EXTENSION’ calculates all customers’ transactions automatically, making them fast, safe and easy.
The Travelandaid.com site has already signed a partnership agreement with a group of the top airlines and hotels, and these agreements mean that for every purchase made via the site the airline and hotel companies will make a donation for the benefit of charity work without adding any additional cost to the traveler.
The proceeds of donations to the site will be used to fund projects that contribute to the provision of clean water, health and social care, education and the economic empowerment of poor communities, in a manner that enables them to maintain their dignity and contribute to their development.
QC works to support poor regions and communities that are exposed to disasters in more than sixty countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe, through eighteen field offices and an extensive network of partners.
QC has signed the humanitarian code of conduct of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and has enjoyed consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations since 1997. Its mission, vision and working methods are consistent with of ‘Qatar Vision 2030’ and the Strategic Plan of the State of Qatar 2011 to 2016.

QC Distributes Food Baskets to 6,050 Affected Families in Yemen
As part of its campaign ‘Yemen, We Are with You,’ QC implemented a huge project to distribute food baskets to the displaced and affected families by the conflict in Yemen. The project covered 15 governorates and helped 6,050 families at a cost of 2,000,000 QR.
In a press release, Mr. Ibrahim Ali Abdullah, QC’s Director of Relief Department, said, “The implementation of this huge project extends our brotherly and humanitarian duty towards the affected people of Yemen who have been suffering from the ongoing conflict. It is also to help make up the food shortage gap. I thank all the Qatari and local good-doers who donated through the radio show ‘Tafrig Korbah’. This show was broadcasted during the past Ramadan in cooperation with Quran Radio in Doha. I also thank the Quran Radio and RACA for their continuous support and help. Moreover, QC is implementing more distinguished projects in the near future.”
The distribution of food baskets project was implemented in cooperation with Charitable Society for Social Welfare (CSSW) during the last month. It was implemented in 15 governorates: Amanat Al Asmeh, Abyan, Shabwah, Sa’da, San’a, Ibb, Hodeda, Hajjah, Al Bayda’, Al Mahwit, Dhmar, Taiz, Hadramaut (Al Mukalla, Al Wadi), and Dhale.
The food baskets, distributed to the beneficiaries, were sufficient for a whole month. The baskets contained 50 kg of flour, 10 kg of sugar, 10 kg of rice, 5 liters of cooking oil, powder milk, macaroni, canned legumes, and others. The project served 6,050 displaced and affected families because of the ongoing crisis in Yemen.
Recognition of Hard Work
This project made the beneficiaries and local management boards in different governorates very happy. Mr. Abdulaziz Zahra, Deputy of Amanat Al Asmeh, said, “We appreciate this humanitarian campaign by QC ‘Yemen, We Are With You’. Many affected Yemenis from different governorates benefited from it, especially those living in Amanat Al Asmeh. This is neither the first nor is it going to be the last project QC implements. We hope other humanitarian organizations would be the same as QC, which has been very giving and supporting.”
Then Mr. Mukhtar Hassan, a member in the local council of Taiz governorate, who attended the inauguration of the campaign said, “I am very happy with this urgently inaugurated humanitarian campaign ‘Yemen, We Are With You’ by QC for the affected people of Taiz governorate. However, Taiz still needs more help. I thank the philanthropists of Qatar and QC for everything they have done.”
Summary of Relief Operations
130,000 displaced and crisis-affected people benefited from QC’s continuous campaign ‘Yemen, We Are with You’ since the recent Yemen crisis started and until the end of last May (2015).
QC’s relief operations for the Yemeni people included healthcare, food, water, shelter, and repairs. The aids were delivered to 8 governorates: San’a, Aden, Ma’rib, Hadramaut, Hajjah, Hodeda, Dhale , and Taiz.
The food aid included 17,300 food baskets, 80 tons of flour, and 180 tons of different types of food which were distributed to the mentioned governorates. In a ceremony sponsored by the Qatari Ambassador in Jakarta,
QC Presents ‘Mushaf Bassira’ (a copy of the Holy Quran for the visually impaired) as a gift to 2,000 visually impaired persons in Indonesia
In Indonesia, QC inaugurated its campaign "Mushaf Bassira" to distribute 2,000 copies to visually impaired persons.
The inauguration ceremony was held in Filmang city in Sumatra Island under the auspices of Mohammed Al-Khater, Qatar Ambassador in Indonesia, and in the presence of the governor, and other important figures. Dr. Said Agil Husin Al Munawar, Indonesia's x-minister of endowment and religious affairs, attended the ceremony and expressed his great appreciation and sincere gratitude to the Qatari ambassador and QC for coming to the city and for distributing copies of the Holy Quran to the visually impaired persons. "We are very happy to be here today. This excellent project cannot but be added to a long list of great projects which QC implements in our country," he said.
Mohammed Al-Khater, Qatar ambassador in Indonesia, said "I am happy to attend this wonderful ceremony. This project is very special because it offers a sacred service. Helping the visually impaired by giving them copies of "Mushaf Bassira", which will assist them in reading and memorizing the Quran, is a precious deed. I also thank QC for all the great efforts it exerts here in Indonesia, the big Islamic country."
Then, the copies were distributed to the visually impaired persons sitting among the audience; and were introduced to the different functions of the copy which made them feel very joyful, and thankful.
Mr. Karam Zeinhom, Country Director of QC Indonesia, said, "This copy of the Holy Quran "Mushaf Bassira" will not serve the Visually impaired persons in Jakarta only, but will extend to serve others in 7 different cities, in 4 Indonesian islands. I thank and appreciate all of you for coming and attending the inauguration of the campaign."
Important Features
The idea of Mushaf Bassira is to provide a manual written in Braille code. Users can select the surah (chapter) they wishe to listen to, and can rewind the verses they wants.
The Mushaf also allows a user to listen to the explanation of the verses; which means s\he can listen to the recitation of the Quran, memorize it, and learn its meaning.
In cooperation with a Malaysian company, QC printed "Mushaf Bassira" to the visually impaired so as to learn the Quran and listen to its recitation easily.
This unique product is very important because there are more than 7,000,000 visually impaired persons in the Arab world. Most of these people cannot afford buying a copy of the Quran written in Braille code; it is expensive, and very big.
This copy has a list of all the surahs (chapters) printed in Braille code with an electronic pen with a sound system. The visually impaired person can use it to listen to famous Quran reciters, to learn the meaning of the words, to know the occasions and circumstances of revelation, to control the sound volume, to easily find the surahs and verses, and to listen to several invocations.
Good-doers can donate by using QC's website qcharity.org\MUSHAF or by going to the QC's headquarter, its branches, or its collecting booths in malls. Ooredoo customers can send "بصيرة" in an SMS to 92652 to donate 400 QR.
The House of the Quran
As part of its interest in teaching Quran and its sciences, QC has implemented a project in Indonesia called "Bait Al-Quran" (The House of the Quran) at a cost of 1,500,000 QR by the end of last year. It offers different services, and more than 350 students are benefiting from it.
The project is basically a school which consists of 6 classes, a mosque, laboratories, a library, a water well, 8 bathrooms, a dorm for the teachers, another one for the students, and two stores.
QC helps improve the educational field so that it would be effectively used. Until the end of last year, QC established around 15 centers which offer different services set in different cities in Indonesia.
QC had already implemented several cultural and educational projects in Indonesia. It also built 16 schools which benefit 53,000 Indonesian citizens. QC also built 496 mosques in Indonesia that serve 25,000 people. Furthermore, QC printed and distributed copies of the Holy Quran to almost 150,000 people.
38,000 beneficiaries at a cost of 2,000,000 QR
QC’s Project in Bangladesh Fights Drought
As it always implements projects to solve the problems of poor communities, QC started a project which offers different services in Nouga in Bangladesh. It has always suffered from drought, lack of drinking and irrigation water, and lack of other basic services.
This project, which cost more than 2,000,000 QR, consists of 12 water units with their networks to provide the targeted people and their lands with water; plus a health center which includes outpatient clinics, inpatient beds, laboratories; and a school for the neighborhood’s children.
This project helps more than 18,000 people and 20,000 patients a year. They are treated at the health center; which increases the total number of beneficiaries to be 38,000 people. Moreover, 1,200 farms make use of the water networks. This project is unique because it works automatically; local committees were trained to operate the machines and to use them in best manner possible. The beneficiaries pay monthly subscription fees which cover operation, and maintenance expenses.
Fighting Drought
This project is one of QC’s most important development projects in the country. All the sources of water in Nouga, one of Bangladesh’s arid areas, either suffer from drought or polluted for six months a year. During this time of the year, the people suffer from lack of clean drinking and irrigating water which results in causing them diseases transmitted by the polluted water. They cannot farm their lands either, which causes them great financial losses and shortage of food supplies. In order for the country to solve this problem, it established special water department called Drought Areas Water Department to fight the drought and help the people get clean water. Because QC always makes sure to help in projects which are good to Bangladesh and its people, it went forward in implementing this project.
Inclusive Centers
It is worth mentioning that QC implements several projects which provide different services in Bangladesh. It establishes inclusive centers which include houses for the sponsored orphans, and provides several services for the target families. This is in addition to many productive and developmental projects such as Khubayb Ibn Adiy Center, which is one of the most essential centers for the orphans, their families, and the neighborhood’s. The center consists of an orphanage, a school (from grade 1 to grade 10), a health center, a vocational training center, farming lands, houses for the employees, playgrounds, and a mosque.
This center provides shelter for 400 orphans, 40 employees and workers, and their families. Around 400 students, from grade 1 to grade 10, go to the center’s school. A comprehensive curriculum was designed for the students of this center which includes general, religious, and vocational subjects. The center’s health unit treats the students, the orphans, the employees, and their families, as well as the neighborhood’s. The unit’s employees make visits to nearby villages to spread health awareness, and to treat the sick villagers. The center also offers the sponsored persons, their families, and the neighborhood’s seasonal projects such as Iftar banquets, Zakat, and Udhiyya. The school of this center opens its doors for the children to study while the training center teaches women sewing, tapestry, and handcrafts. The center also supervises QC’s other projects in Rangpur District like building mosques, complexes, and income-generating projects.
