Qatar Charity’s Bread Production Initiative in Northern Syria

2024-05-15

In a bid to bolster food security and promote self-sufficiency in northern Syria, Qatar Charity (QC) continues its steadfast commitment to the region through its ‘Support the Wheat Value Chain’ project. Now in its fifth consecutive year, this initiative has recently seen the establishment of an automated bread production line in Maabatli, Afrin district, marking a significant milestone in QC’s ongoing efforts to empower local communities.

Empowering Communities: Fostering Resilience Through Bread Production

The newly installed bread production line serves as a beacon of hope for over 50,000 individuals, particularly internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing in camps across northern Syria. With a remarkable daily production capacity of 15,000 loaves of bread, this initiative aims to alleviate hunger, reduce financial burdens, and enhance food security within the region.

Cultivating Prosperity: Supporting Local Farmers for Sustainable Development

Underpinning QC’s commitment to early recovery, development, and sustainability, the project has made substantial strides in supporting local farmers. Through the provision of agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and fuel for irrigation, 120 farmers have been empowered to cultivate their land effectively. Moreover, QC’s procurement of 1200 tons of wheat directly from local farmers has not only stimulated economic activity but also contributed to the region’s agricultural ecosystem.

Ensuring Accessibility: Subsidized Flour Distribution to Vulnerable Communities

A key highlight of the project lies in its distribution of subsidized flour to bakeries in the region, ensuring that essential food items remain accessible to vulnerable communities. This initiative has benefited over 25,000 IDPs living in camps, with an additional 5000 individuals receiving free bread as part of QC’s humanitarian outreach efforts.

Looking Ahead: Qatar Charity’s Vision for Sustainable Development

Looking ahead, QC is poised to launch the sixth edition of the project, with a renewed focus on expanding support and building resilience in local communities. Initiatives aimed at addressing climate change and empowering women in rural areas to contribute to wheat production are set to be key priorities. Additionally, QC plans to provide agricultural machinery to farmers and local institutions, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and resilience-building in northern Syria.
