Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Explained and How to Help?

2024-07-18

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is currently the worst in the world, with millions of people facing precarious conditions due to ongoing conflict and instability. As the situation continues to worsen, understanding the crisis and knowing how to help becomes crucial. This article provides an overview of the crisis, key facts, and effective ways to contribute to the Sudan Emergency Appeal.

What is Happening in Sudan?

Before the Conflict

Before the recent escalation, Sudan was already grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis. Instability and economic pressures affected 15.8 million people, making it one of the most vulnerable countries in the world.

Conflict Impact

The situation took a drastic turn in April 2023 when violent conflict erupted, forcing millions to flee their homes. The conditions have since deteriorated, leaving 25 million people in urgent need of assistance. The conflict has particularly impacted areas like Al Fasher, where civilians face horrific conditions.

Displacement Crisis

As of June 2024, around 12 million people have been displaced, with over 8.6 million displaced within Sudan – the largest crisis of its kind globally. Up to 143,000 people have been forced to move in just three months due to clashes. These numbers highlight the immense scale of displacement and the urgent need for humanitarian aid.

Alarming Food Security Situation

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UNICEF, and the World Food Programme (WFP) have issued warnings about the rapid deterioration in food security in Sudan. The country is facing a hunger catastrophe on a scale not seen since the Darfur crisis in the early 2000s.

– 755,000 people are in catastrophic conditions (IPC Phase 5) with a risk of famine in 14 areas.

– 25.6 million people** are in high levels of acute hunger (IPC Phase 3+).

This means that half of Sudan’s war-battered population struggles daily to feed themselves and their families. People are dying of hunger, and immediate action is required to prevent further loss of life.

Qatar Charity’s Response

Qatar Charity (QC) has launched the Sudan Appeal campaign to provide critical support amid this dire situation. The campaign aims to help over one million people by providing food aid, clean water, sanitation facilities, healthcare services, and shelter tents.

QC has a history of supporting Sudan with comprehensive relief efforts, benefiting approximately 400,000 people across various regions. Their ongoing initiatives are crucial in addressing the immediate needs of the displaced and those affected by the conflict.
