Qatar Charity's innovative project enhances educational stability in Yemen

9/24/2024

Qatar Charity (QC) has successfully implemented a significant project to support education in Yemen's Hajjah and Ibb governorates. The project involved renovating several non-operational schools, providing incentives to hundreds of teachers, and distributing school bags and supplies to thousands of students at the start of the new academic year.

The project, which began last year and was completed this year, comes amid a severe deterioration in Yemen's educational conditions, as reported by international humanitarian organizations. The ongoing crisis in the country, now in its ninth year, has negatively impacted the continuity of education in schools due to a lack of necessities and the suspension of teachers' salaries. This situation has, in turn, exacerbated the issue of student dropouts.

The project aims to enhance educational opportunities and encourage students to return to school. It included key activities focused on improving educational conditions and supporting teachers and students in these marginalized areas and villages within the two targeted governorates.

The education support project rehabilitated eight schools in remote and marginalized villages within the Hajjah and Ibb governorates that had been out of service. The rehabilitation efforts included constructing new classrooms, renovating and maintaining existing classrooms and toilets, and providing new school chairs and desks. These improvements have significantly contributed to creating a more suitable learning environment for students.

The project also provided financial incentives to over 300 teachers, both male and female, for several months, motivating them to deliver better education and improving their living conditions. Additionally, around 4,100 students received school bags containing essential school supplies and stationery. This support aimed to meet students' basic needs, encourage them to continue education, and enhance their readiness for the current academic year.

Qatar Charity's educational support has made a significant impact on the beneficiaries and has been appreciated by local authorities in Yemen. Mr. Fathi Abdu Ali Al-Basir, Head of the Projects and Equipment at the Education Office in the Ibb Governorate, expressed gratitude to Qatar Charity for its support in the education sector in Al Dhihar and Dhi As Sufal districts. He added that three schools were targeted for rehabilitation and renovation, a fourth school was equipped with chairs and desks, incentives were provided to teachers at all four schools, and school bags were distributed to their students. He highlighted that these interventions have improved teacher performance, stabilized the educational process, and brought many students back to school after dropping out due to their families' challenging circumstances.

In a related development, Qatar Charity’s intervention at Ali Bin Abi Talib School in Hajjah Governorate has made a significant difference. Principal Ahmed Qa'id Al-Sharqi remarked, "Before Qatar Charity's support, we faced numerous challenges, including insufficient classrooms and desks, unserviceable toilets, and a lack of school supplies for students due to their families' difficult living conditions, especially in the current circumstances. Qatar Charity’s assistance has changed the situation, revitalized the school, and stabilized the educational process. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Qatar Charity and to the generous people of Qatar."
