Qatar Charity launches a campa

Following a call by international organizations that raised the alarm, Qatar Charity has begun finalizing a campaign to combat the cholera epidemic in Yemen. The campaign is expected to benefit 40,000 people.

It will focus on providing drinkable water in the areas most in need, in order to prevent people from using polluted water that results in the infection, and to support health centers to offer treatment and medicine for the affected people, especially as most health centers have been affected by the Yemeni crisis.

Imminent danger

Mr. Mohammed Al Kaabi, Director of Qatar Charity’s Relief Department, said, "QC has followed the Yemeni crisis since its beginning and has launched Emergency Relief Campaigns and Projects in various regions. However, the magnitude of the current crisis is great and our brothers are in danger. International organizations have launched repeated appeals to accelerate the fight against the spreading cholera epidemic in Yemen, which prompted us to launch this campaign, which we hope will benefit 40,000 people.”

Moreover, he appealed to the generous donors to respond quickly to support the campaign, pointing out that every passing day the suffering increases and many lives may unfortunately be lost while they could have been saved if the necessary support had been available.

To Donate for the campaign

It is noteworthy that, through certain stocks, benefactors in Qatar are urged to donate for the benefit of their affected brothers in Yemen. The stocks are: “Water supply” which is worth 100 QR, the "food basket" which is worth 300 QR, and "medical services" with a worth of QR 500. Donation to this campaign is also available using one of these means: send a text message “sms” having “YEAV” symbol to 92632 to donate 50 QR, and to 92642 to donate 100 QR, and to 92428 to donate 500 QR.

Urgent humanitarian appeal

The United Nations has announced that an estimated 7.6 million people are living in areas vulnerable to the transmission of cholera in Yemen. The UN also mentioned the inadequate sanitation and assured that all displacement places and shelters are at risk of transmission of the disease. Besides, Red Cross stressed that 180 people have died of the disease since late April, and the situation requires immediate intervention from international and regional organizations to reduce the risk of the spread of cholera in Yemen.

Qatar Charity distributes food

QC has implemented a full-scale Relief Project in Somalia to distribute dry rations, benefiting thousands of drought-affected families in different parts of Somalia.

Food parcels were distributed to 4633 families in a number of areas of Somalia. Each parcel consists of 25 kg of rice, 25 kg of sugar, 25 kg of flour, 6 liters of oil, 2.5 kg of milk powder, and 2 kg of dates.

Timely Assistance

Mr. Faisal Al-Fahida, QC's EDO, said that QC continues to provide assistance to drought-affected areas in Somalia. With the holy month of Ramadan approaching, it has implemented a number of relief projects including the distribution of dry rations to thousands of drought-affected families.

A number of areas of Somalia have severely affected by drought including Mogadishu and such assistance to be both extremely timely and essential given the difficult humanitarian situation they are going through. We hope that such assistance will alleviate the harsh conditions they are experiencing, Al-Fahida added.

The beneficiaries thanked the philanthropists, Qatar State, and QC for their efforts and support.

Atta Alkher

It is noteworthy that “Atta Alkher from Doha Alkher” initiative had provided emergency relief during its last visit to Somaila, included food parcels, drugs, and drinking water.

The initiative had provided food parcels for 10000 Somali families as well as medical assistance including the distribution of medical solutions, administering medical examinations for internal diseases, malnutrition, and Dehydration.

A humanitarian delegation from QC has visited Somalia and studied the various aspects of the humanitarian situation there. It has launched major relief projects, including the distribution of daily meals for 7000 families.

Medical Conveys

As part of Emergency Relief Projects, QC dispatches medical convoys to affected areas of Somalia including Soomaaliland, Puntland, Muqdisho and southwest territories in order to reduce the spread of epidemics.

Approximately 16,200 persons benefited from these medical services especially the regions that lost many persons and millions of livestock due to the lack of food, drugs and drinking water.

Artesian wells will be drilled to provide drinking water for 4000 persons of the cholera and drought-affected areas

Qatar Charity & UNHCR to provi

Qatar Charity and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have signed a cooperation agreement to set up emergency shelter for displaced Rohingya Refugees in Myanmar, worth half a million dollars. The shelters are expected to accommodate 2,100 displaced people for six months.

This agreement was signed at Qatar Charity headquarters by Mr. Khalid Khalifa, UNHCR's regional representative at the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and Mr. Yousuf bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, Qatar Charity's Chief Executive Officer.

Intensifying Suffering

Under the agreement, the UNHCR will set up 420 temporary shelters for the Rohingya refugees in three areas in the Rakhine and Kajine states, with funds up to half a million dollars (equivalent to 1,825,000 Riyals) from Qatar Charity. Mr. Yousuf bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari stated that this cooperation occurs as Rohingya Muslims are experiencing more and more suffering due to the recent escalation of the persecution campaign against them, which led to the flight of hundreds of thousands of them towards the borders with Bangladesh. This agreement shows Qatar Charity’s prompt implementation of emergency relief projects and care to provide humanitarian assistance in cooperation with international organizations, especially in countries where these organizations can take action easily as in Myanmar. Furthermore, the agreement enhances Qatar Charity’s cooperation and partnership with United Nations organizations, especially the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Qatar’s Humanitarian Efforts

On his part, Mr. Khalid Khalifa, UNHCR’s regional representative in the GCC region, thanked the State of Qatar for its humanitarian efforts and expressed his appreciation of the effective cooperation between Qatar Charity and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which aims to meet the humanitarian needs of displaced people and refugees around the world. He also pointed out that these efforts clearly demonstrate the continued humanitarian commitment that Qatar Charity has vowed to remain faithful for and represent a prime example of international solidarity.

A Consultative Meeting

The humanitarian aids dedicated by the charity to the Rohingya IDPs from 2012 to 2017 amount to about 13.5 million riyals covering health care, food, shelter, water and sanitation. They were offered to approximately 370,000 displaced persons in coordination with international organizations including the UNHCR.

One of Qatar Charity’s relief efforts concerning the Rohingya refugees in Myanmar is the construction of 41 houses for displaced families, the setting up of five wooden shelters for 40 families and distributing tens of thousands of food baskets among them. The Charity has also distributed meat from the slaughtered animals that were dedicated in the Islamic Sacrifice Feast this year.

Qatar Charity had previously hosted the second consultative meeting on the humanitarian situation of Myanmar Muslims, which was organized in cooperation with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and was attended by representatives of 30 local, regional and international organizations in Doha in 2012. The Charity had delivered 6 million riyals in aids for the Rohingya refugees on the Bangladeshi borders at the time.

Help Burmese Muslims Campaign

Qatar Charity also mobilizes efforts and support for the Rohingya refugees through the continuation of its Burmese Muslims Calling for Help Campaign which is meant to carry on with its assistance to the Rohingya refugees and displaced persons living in extremely difficult conditions after being forced to leave their burned towns and villages. This made them in dire need for relief aids, food, shelter, clothing, and health care, especially after the tragic developments in the past few days.

Food Baskets and Shelter

Qatar Charity has urgently launched a 156,000 Qatari Riyals food basket initiative to distribute the basic food items including rice, lentils, cooking oil, sugar, milk, noodles, and fish canisters among approximately 4,700 people as a first phase. The Charity will also establish 5 wooden shelters in Rakhine, each one has the capacity to accommodate 8 families at the cost of 20,000 riyals, each. The five shelters’ total cost is 100,000 riyals and they will accommodate 40 families (about 240 persons).

QC Provides Relief Aid to Volc

Qatar Charity (QC) has distributed relief aid to more than 2,000 displaced people as part of the emergency response to the victims of the Bali volcano in Indonesia.

The relief aid included 1,000 blankets, 80 tents, 10 tons of rice and half a ton of Macaroni as well as the Qatar Charity provided the playground with toys and swings for the psychological support and entertainment of displaced children.

The food relief provided by Qatar Charity will suffice for a month. The tents and children's games will remain, at least, for eight months.

The distribution of the Emergency Relief Aid carried out after Qatar Charity, in cooperation with local authorities, assessed the needs of those affected by the volcano in Bali, Indonesia.

Humanitarian Duty

Director of the QC’s Office in Indonesia Karam Zainham said that the office distributed the humanitarian and non-food relief to the victims in the camp of Karangasem in Bali.

The QC’s aid distribution event attended by many well-known and prominent figures, started with a speech of the Director of the QC’s office in Indonesia Karam Zainham, in which he expressed his pleasure to participate in alleviating the pain of the displaced people affected by the volcano.

He noted that that Qatar Charity started its journey in Indonesia, when the tsunami hit the country in 2004 and will continue its efforts to support needy and poor people.

Zainham thanked the people of Qatar for their urgent response to support those affected by the disaster and wished their quick return to the homes.

Several Indonesian renowned personalities, including the vice-president of the city of Bali, appreciated the Qatar Charity’s efforts to provide urgent relief aid to the volcano victims.

The QC’s office team visited some families in their tents to know their conditions and hoped to meet their needs in the nearer future.

Reconstruction

It is worth mentioning that Qatar Charity has contributed to the reconstruction in Indonesia following the tsunami and has built the Al Rayyan Residential Complex for quake-affected people in Aceh, which comprises 170 apartments and several other facilities, as well as Qatar Charity provided several Income-generating Projects to improve the living conditions of those affected by the quake.

QC's Emergency Releif Reaches

Qatar Charity distributed Emergency Winter Relief and food aid to more than 1,300 families with 4,500 people in 12 municipalities and villages of Bosnia and Herzegovina at a total cost of QR 500,000.

The aid distibuted in many places of the country including some highland areas, came within the framework of the 'Affected By Winter' campaign, aiming to alleviate the suffering of needy families.

The releif assitance has been provided through the QC's office in the country at the time of snowfall and when the temperatures sharply dropped there to less than 15 degrees below zero.

Faisal Al-Fahida, Executive Director of the QC’s Executive Management of International Operations said beneficiary families in Bosnia and Herzegovina received food baskets containing flour, oil, sugar, macaroni, canned meat, salt and rice, as well as they received blankets and winter clothes too.

More than 100 tons of wood for heating were distributed to poor families living in the highlands, which are hard-to-reach areas, particularly at this time of the year, due to of the heavy snowfall, leading to the interruption of transport to and from these places, Al-Fahida added.

The beneficiaries of the aid expressed their thanks and appreciation to the Qatari people for their humanitarian initiatives and their continued support to the Bosnian people in order to alleviate the suffering of those in need, affected and orphans during the winter.

Qatar Charity has already distributed winter clothes, blankets and food baskets to more than 400 orphans along with their families in Bosnia and Herzegovina within the framework of the QC's 'Orphan Below Zero' campaign.

For the second consecutive year, Qatar Charity has carried out the same campaign to provide warmth and due care to its Syrian orphans in Lebanon and Turkey, as well as its orphans in Kyrgyzstan, Bosnia, Albania and Kosovo at a cost of 3 million riyals.

QC provides emergency relief t

Qatar Charity (QC) has started the distribution of dry food to more than 6,000 families affected by drought in Baidoa city of Somalia. Thousands of Somali families have been displaced from affected remote areas to nearby villages and towns, due to the drought, which has frequently occurred in the country over the last three years, because of the disruptions in the rainfall.

Director of Qatar Charity Office in Somalia, Abdel Nour Mirsal said the dry food has been distributed to 670 drought-hit families in Baidoa and nearby areas as the first phase of a relief aid project for drought-affected people in Somalia.

Qatar Charity noted that the Emergency Relief Project included the distribution of dry food, safe drinking water through tanks, medical convoys, and the distribution of plastic blankets for families to protect them from the heat of the sun and the cold of the night.

QC said that the relief campaign will be implemented in the displaced people camps in the outskirts of Mogadishu and most affected regions from the far north to the far south.

The Emergency Relief Projects include medical convoys providing primary medical services in Somalia, in order to reduce the spread of diseases and epidemics, in addition to a charity kitchen benefiting daily about 2,000 families in the cities of Mogadishu and Baidoa.

The humanitarian situation in Somalia may worsen this year due to drought, based on climate reports and forecasts, according to international humanitarian reports.

Earlier, the QC Office in Somalia rehabilitated many thousands of the floods and cyclones victims through its early recovery programs, which have contributed to restoring basic services and environment and social life, providing livelihoods and shelter, and reintegrating displaced populations.

Qatar Charity and UNHCR signed an agreement in October 2017 in Geneva to reintegrate Somali returnees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and receiving communities through the construction and rehabilitation of public infrastructure in the water, education, shelter, and sanitation sectors with a budget of over $9 million, which will approximately benefit 100,000 people.
