Wife giving Zakah to poor husband

Can a wife give Zakaah to her poor husband? Can a wife help her husband by her money?

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

1 - A wife can give her money of Zakah to her poor husband. This is the most correct opinion of Muslim scholars. This is also the viewpoint of the Shafi'e school of Fiqh and it is narrated from the two Imams Malik and Ahmad (May Allah have mercy on them).

The evidence for this is the hadith of Zainab wife of Abdullah bin Mas'oud ( may Allaah be pleased with them) said: 'O Prophet of Allah! Today you ordered people to give alms and I had an ornament and intended to give it as alms, but Ibn Mas'oud said that he and his children deserved it more than anybody else'. The Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) replied: "Ibn Mas'oud had spoken the truth. Your husband and your children had more right to it than anybody else".[al-Bukhari]

2 - As for the assistance of a wife to her husband - other than Zakah - it is a good act. All the Muslim scholars have agreed on its permissibility for the following verse: (And give to the women (whom you marry) their Mahr with a good heart, but if they, of their own good pleasure, remit any part of it to you, take it, and enjoy it without fear of any harm (as Allah has made it lawful).[4:4].

This act is better than giving him Zakah, because some scholars disagree with giving him the Zakah, as we mentioned above.

Allah knows best.
