Qatar Charity opens Rohama village in Niger

With the generous support from the people in Qatar, Qatar Charity opened the “Rohama” village in Niger to benefit 12,000 people.

The village, which was established at the cost of nearly QR8mn, was opened in the presence of many ministers, parliamentarians and officials from the government of Niger, in addition to several representatives of local and international NGOs.

The village, which is 120 km away from the capital Niamey, consists of 100 housing units, each covering 45 m2, a school with 12 classrooms, a computer hall, a library, a clinic, a 10-hectare farm for agriculture and livestock, and a grain mill. An artesian well was drilled, which was equipped with a 30 cubic meter tank. Also, water connections were provided to all housing units to address the water problem, in addition to providing the solar-powered lighting facility in the village.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of the Interior of Niger extended his thanks and appreciation to Qatar Charity and the respected donors from Qatar for their support for this project. Qatar Charity has moved from traditional small projects to projects that meet the needs of beneficiaries in various sectors and fields in their daily lives, the Minister added.

For his part, the Minister of Housing in Niger expressed his pride in the accomplishments made by Qatar charity. “This is a great achievement, because it is unusual for non-governmental organizations to be interested in the housing sector”, said the Minister, adding, “Qatar Charity is one of the leading organizations in this field. The houses we are celebrating today are not the first project of Qatar Charity in our country. It built 150 housing units for the benefit of flood-affected people in 2016 and 60 housing units in 2017. Today, it is adding 100 housing units to its balance by opening this model village.

The governor of the Tillabéri Region said, “Today, I am happy with this achievement in my region. I received from Qatar Charity all cooperation and response to all the proposals that we have made from time to time until the project was completed, which is the first of its kind in my region. For the first time in a remote village, we find a complete lighting in the houses and other service facilities such as school, clinic,  and mosque . The project has made a quantum leap in the village.”

Jassim Abdullah Al Jassim, advisor to CEO of Qatar Charity, said, “We are pleased to celebrate the opening of the Rohama Model Village, for which we have been waiting for two years. Today, we are glad to hand over the village to beneficiaries to provide them with various services in the fields of health, education, housing, and clean water.”
