QC Implements Relief Projects

The aids are sufficient for the refugees and returnees for a month

Through its office in Somalia and as part of its relief campaign “Yemen, We are With You”, QC implemented an urgent relief project which targeted 600 families of the Yemeni refugees in Somalia and some of the Somali returnees from Yemen who are living in Mogadishu, Hargeisa, and Bosaso.

The food baskets, distributed to the beneficiaries, were sufficient for a whole month. Each family received 25 kg of rice, 25 kg of flour, 15 kg of sugar, 3 liters of cooking oil, 2.5 kg of powder milk, and 2 kg of dates.

Prominent Figures

Many prominent figures took part in the distribution of the aids to the people, including some members of the Somali parliament, and the representatives of the Yemeni community in Somalia. They all commended QC’s role in helping the Yemeni and Somali peoples.

This is one of so many other projects in which QC continues to fulfill its role in aiding and helping others. In addition, QC always makes sure that its beneficiaries are the neediest. The Yemeni people are suffering from a dire crisis which forced the families to emigrate and ask for asylum. This, of course, left the families without any living necessities.

Although Somalia is suffering from hard conditions and security issues, it became one of the countries which received the Yemeni refugees. Therefore, it is now the responsibility of those who work in charity and humanitarian fields to strengthen their efforts so that Somalia does not suffer from a critical condition, too.

130,000 Beneficiaries

130,000 beneficiaries benefited from QC’s continuous campaign ‘Yemen, We Are with You’ since the recent Yemen crisis started and until the end of last May (2015).

The food aid included 17,300 food baskets, 80 tons of flour, and 180 tons of different types of food which were distributed to the different governorates. Furthermore, 3 kitchens were prepared and equipped with foodstuff to provide daily fresh meals for 1,000 persons. Regarding healthcare, the hospitals of Aden, Ma’rib, and Taiz were supplied with some equipment, 100 first-aid bags, and a large amount of medications, and medical disposables.

In addition, 8 water tanks were distributed in Aden with the capacity of 1,000 liters. QC also distributed hundreds of mattresses and blankets to the displaced families there. Another project was funded to clean Aden Municipality in cooperation with its workers.

Call for Help

It is worth mentioning that when the Yemeni crisis started, QC appealed for help to provide 1,260,000 conflict-affected people with food, and medications.

After its appeal and as a first step, QC launched its campaign ‘Yemen, We Are with You’ to collect 36,500,000 QR (10,000,000 USD) to urgently deliver these humanitarian aids to the most affected categories.

QC also supervised the distribution of aids which Qatar sent to the people of Yemen. The aids were delivered through an air bridge from Doha to Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport following the instructions of his highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, God bless him. The aids were delivered over two days; there were 4 airplanes which carried 240 tons of different materials.

The aids were received by a delegation of QC which included Mr. Ibrahim Ali Abdullah, QC's Relief Department Director, and Mohammed Wa'i, QC's Office Director in Yemen.

QC’s field team was able to aid many conflict-affected families since the crisis first started in Aden and other Yemeni cities. They provided the families with food, drugs, and medical disposables. They sent the medical supplies to the hospitals so that they would treat the injured. The team also provided the families with food baskets and other basic and necessary items.

QC Implements Relief Projects

QC’s office in Jakarta intervened to help the Rohingya families who were washed up on the beach of Indonesia while trying to escape from their countries.
QC offered the Rohingya refugees food, clothes, water and school bags for children. It also dug for them 3 wells and offered their children some school bags.

QC helped save the Rohingya refugees who fled their countries because of the oppression they suffered from there. 1,090 refugees benefited from QC’s project.

Hundreds of the Muslim Rohingya families were washed to the coast of Aceh in Indonesia. They were disoriented for having spent few days in the sea without food, mattresses or covers.

Providing Water

The second QC saw what was happening to the families in Indonesia, it distributed to them dry and cooked foodstuffs, clothes, cleaning tools (such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrush), and school bags for around 200 children.

QC dug 3 wells to provide the refugees with drinking water through cisterns but with limited quantities.

Children’s Sufferings

1,090 Rohingya refugees in Indonesia benefited from QC’s relief project. The aids covered the refugees living in the shelters of the Northern Aceh, Eastern Aceh, Nijsa, and Aceh Tamiang. The refugees were provided with rice, sugar, oil, vermicelli, tea, dates and other basic foodstuffs. The project was implemented at a cost of 200,000QR

Through this project, QC hopes to alleviate the refugees’ sufferings and help the children feel safe once again. They all have been through a difficult time and difficult circumstances.

QC’s Message

Mr. Karam Zeinhom, QC’s Office Director in Indonesia, said that QC has always proven itself committed to helping refugees and needy people. “Aiding those people is a priority to us. We will do our best to make sure they are saved and in good conditions. We cooperate with different governments, organizations and countries to help all the people who are conflict-affected or are suffering from natural disasters. This is our message at QC: to help the needy. Assisting the refugees in Indonesia is only a part of what we aim at. We’ll never stop offering our hand and support,” said he.

Continuous Giving

QC’s office in Indonesia was opened more than ten years ago after Tsunami hit the region in 2004. It implements relief and developmental projects there. During the first half of 2015, the office was able to implement more than 258 projects in the fields of health, water, education, orphans sponsorship, shelter and mosques at a cost of more than 6,500,000QR. Health projects were implemented at a cost of 55,000QR, shelter projects for the needy at a cost of 84,000QR, 218 wells and toilets at a cost of 958,000QR, 36 built mosques at a cost of more than 3,000,000QR, a school at a cost of 350,000, and or 2,500 orphans sponsorship at a cost of 1,500,000QR for the first quarter of the year.

QC Inaugurates ‘Syria: Endless

The campaign’s target is to collect 54,000,000 QR to make 35,000 displaced Syrians and refugees feel warm.
The campaign seeks to provide winter clothes, heaters, blankets, fuel, and supplies. Donations are 100 – 1,000QR worth.
Al Kuwairi: “I encourage the philanthropists to donate for this campaign so the Syrians would receive winter supplies. We don’t want people dying because of cold again.”

QC inaugurated ‘Syria: Endless Winter’ campaign to help face the cold of winter. Its main goal is to provide winter supplies needed for the Syrians living inside Syria and the refugees in the neighboring countries. The Campaign is to collect around 54,000,000 QR for the benefit of 735,000 people.

After the weather forecast had anticipated that this winter is going to be harsher and colder, QC made sure to inaugurate this campaign so as to hurry and help the Syrians.

QC encouraged the philanthropists and good-doers of Qatar and those residing there to offer a helping hand to the displaced and refugees to alleviate their expected sufferings because of winter. The campaign calls for the people to support the campaign’s products whose prices vary 50 – 1,000QR.

The Campaign’s Products

The campaign’s products include: ‘Winter Banquet for Family of 4’ at a cost of 1,000 QR. It comprises a blanket, a heater, jackets, hats, gloves, socks, and scarves; A ‘Blanket’ at a cost of 100 QR; a ‘Heater’ at a cost of 250 QR; a ‘Winter Bag for Two at a cost of 400 QR which includes hats, gloves, socks, and scarves; a ‘Food Basket’ that is sufficient for a family for one month (it has the basic supplies) at a cost of 200QR; a ‘School Bag’ at a cost of 100 QR; and bread sufficient for a month for one family at a cost of 50 QR.

In a press release, Mr. Youssef Al Kwairi, QC’s CEO, said, “Winter is making the Syrian situation worse. Recently, the number of displaced Syrians and refugees has increased. We have to hurry and help them. I encourage the philanthropists and good doers of Qatar and the people residing there to stand side by side with the Syrians.” He highlighted the importance of having to meet the Syrians’ needs by providing them with supplies that would make them and their children feel warm. He pointed out how QC had already offered similar aids in previous seasons when snowy weather and howling storms were at their worst.

The Outcome of 4 Years

QC was one of the very first to aid the Syrian people. It has a trained team and a specialized management to respond to catastrophes. The number of people who benefited from its aids since 2011 is 6,083,617 affected-people in the fields of food, shelter, health and education, which were implemented at a cost of 322,000,000 QR. According to the 2014 report of FTS of OCHA, QC received the first rank across universal NGOs for the number of aid projects it had implemented for the benefit of the Syrian people.

Last Winter Campaign

128,619 benefited from ‘Syria Winter’ campaign implemented at a cost of 10,000,000QR by QC last winter in a number of Syrian governorates and for refugees in Lebanon and Turkey. The beneficiaries received tents, blankets, mattresses, fuel, heaters, children clothes, supplies and milk for the children and family.

Important Pledges

By the end of last month, QC had organized a conference entitled “The Syrian Humanitarian Crisis Conference”. 50 different international, regional, Arabic, and Syrian humanitarian organizations attended. The conference focused on bringing the humanitarian organizations interested in the Syrian situation together so as to cooperate and coordinate together. The main purpose of the conference was to best face the deteriorating circumstances of the displaced Syrians and refugees; especially that winter’s already started.

The attendants pledged to implement a number of projects at a cost of 144,000,000 QR. QC announced setting aside 100,000,000QR from that amount to the Syrian people starting from 2016. In addition, QC announced paying 30% of any project budget intended to serve the Syrians in winter according to the society’s mechanisms for cooperation and association.

QC Distributes Relief Aids to

The aids, from which 585 families benefited, included foodstuffs and cleaning materials.
Sheikha Hessa bint Khalifa Al Thani, “I thank QC for its efforts in relieving the displaced Syrians and refugees, and distributing aids to the Yemeni refugees.

With the participation of Sheikha Hessa bint Khalifa Al Thani, the Arab League’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs and QC’s Goodwill Ambassador, QC distributed humanitarian relief aids to the Yemeni refugees in the coastal region of Obock.

From which 585 Yemeni families in Obock benefited, the aids included basic foodstuffs and cleaning materials.

Easy and Accurate

Sheikha Hessa participated in the distribution of the aids which reached all Yemeni families in Djibouti. She also visited QC’s office in Djibouti to review with its staff the conditions of the Yemeni refugees and what they would need in the future.

The aids were distributed in coordination with the concerned authorities including ONARS (the Organisation National d’Assistance aux Réfugiéset Sinistrés), government representatives in Obock, and representatives of the Yemeni refugees in the city. This cooperation led to the ease and accuracy of distribution to all refugees.

Relieving the Sufferance

Mr. Faisal Rashid al-Fahida, QC’s Executive Director of Operations, said that QC proved its ultimate commitment to provide the Yemeni refugees with the necessary aids, hoping to relieve their sufferance and secure a better life for them.

He emphasized that QC gave priority in its relief projects to the people inside Yemen, where many could have no access to potable water, food, or medicine.

Mr. Al- Fahida added that QC would exert extra efforts in the future with all partners concerned with the Yemeni people (inhabitants and refugees) to meet their most pressing humanitarian needs.

Deliberative Conference

On a related matter, Sheikha Hessa commended QC’s efforts in relieving the affected people specially the displaced Syrians and refugees. She mentioned her previous participation in inaugurating several projects implemented by QC near the Syrian Turkish borders. She also praised QC’s responsiveness with her initiative to distribute relief aids to Yemeni refugees in Obock region.

The Sheikha’s words were delivered in the deliberative conference to which she had invited all local and foreign Arabic and Islamic charity organizations in Djibouti last Wednesday. The conference was part of the League of Arab State’s plan to develop its humanitarian work and activate the Arabic coordination mechanism. She also said that her role was to pay field visits, present studies to the concerned ministerial councils, and contact national and international organizations to coordinate the humanitarian work,

Yemen, We are With You

QC opened an office in Djibouti to provide humanitarian aids to the Yemeni refugees and coordinate the funding and implementation of relief projects in Yemen in addition to offering relief aids to the poor in Djibouti.

QC inaugurated in the beginning of the Yemeni crisis a relief campaign entitled “Yemen,We are With you”. The objective was to raise 36,500,000 QR to provide about 1,260,000 Yemenis with food and medicine. It also supervised the distribution of 240 tons of varied Qatari aids that had been airlifted to Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport. In addition, QC hosted the deliberative conference that discussed the humanitarian conditions in Yemen and was attended by numerous humanitarian organizations from the Arab Gulf and the Islamic World. The conference drew a plan for rapid humanitarian intervention and distributed the roles among humanitarian actors who announced their commitment to offering rapid humanitarian aids.

QC was the first Qatari humanitarian association that to relieve the people affected by the Chapala cyclone which hit the island “Socotra” and a number of Coastal cities in Yemen. It immediately implemented a relief campaign from which 3,000 displaced people benefited.

More than 936,000 people benefited from the relief aids assigned to Yemen in 2015 at a cost of 24,700,000 QR.

QC Undertakes the Treatment of

As part of its efforts to ease the sufferance of the Syrian people, QC undertook the treatment of the injured Syrians in Al-Basha’er Hospital in Tripoli.

Tragic Events

In order to prepare the center to offer the needed medical help and follow up on the patients’ treatment and recovery, QC secured a specialized medical and administrative team and equipped the center with all the necessary medical supplies.

At a cost of about 700,000 QR, the project secures the treatment of the sick and injured among the Syrian refugees in Lebanon. It also grants that the patients receive their medication during the treatment period. In response to the worsening humanitarian circumstances of the Syrian people due to the ongoing tragic events, the project came to meet the aggravating health needs of the victims specially the sick and injured refugees.

The project was implemented in cooperation with the Union of Relief and Development Associations in Lebanon and aimed at supporting a medical center to offer rapid medical care to the sick and injured refugees.

Saving Lives

Mr. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Kaaby, Head of Relief Department in QC, said that QC’s efforts represented its brotherly and humanitarian role, and its concern to offer its services to those who needed them the most. He pointed that the Syrian people deserved all the possible help due to their difficult circumstances.

He added that the project saved the lives of many injured and seriously ill people. He referred to the deficiencies in the medical services, and difficulties in providing primary healthcare and performing surgical operations to the wounded, as well as the deterioration of the medical field’s infrastructure, and the scarcity of medications and other medical requirements in Syria. All those reasons –said he- would force the sick and injured to leave the country.

He emphasized that QC would continue the support from which tens of thousands of sick and injured Syrians benefited.

Increasing Concerns

It is worth mentioning that at a cost of 1,300,000 QR, QC implemented in the past few weeks a project to support and equip medical points and health centers to enable them to receive the sick and injured Syrians who took refuge to Lebanon or were displaced in Syria.

8 health organizations in Syria and Lebanon benefited from the project. Among these is Arsal Medical Center which contains Emergency, Pediatric, Operations, Orthopedic, Radiology, and CT Departments in addition to a Laboratory and patients rooms. It secures the medications for all the sick and injured Syrians. Over 90,000 people benefit from the center yearly. Other centers include Al-Tufail Medical Center to which many Syrian families took refuge –about 850 people benefit from it monthly-, and Shebaa Medical Center which provides medical services to about 150 people monthly.

The number of the displaced Syrians and refugees who benefited from QC’s relief projects until the end of last October was 6,083,517. From April 2011 until October 2015, the projects’ costs reached 322,000,000 QR.

Due to their difficult conditions, the people inside Syria received 67% of the aids at a cost of 213,063,000 QR. The rest were sent to the Syrian refugees in the surrounding countries: 18% to Lebanon (58,272,000 QR), 8% to Jordan (about 26,889,000 QR), 5.5% to Turkey (19,000,000 QR), and 1.5% to Iraq and other countries to which some Syrians took refuge (4,500,000 QR). The total health costs reached 68,214,000 QR.

Because of the size of its projects for the Syrians, QC was considered the first NGO in Syrian relief according to OCHA’s (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) FTS (Financial Tracking Service).

QC Provides Food for Around 10

Around 10,000 Syrian refugees in Arsal, Lebanon, benefited from the relief project implemented by QC. This project was part of its continuous efforts to help and alleviate the sufferings of the displaced Syrians and refugees.

The relief project is mainly about providing food baskets for 3 months for the benefit of 1,650 families living in the following camps: Kuwait Al Kheir, Yasar Idlib, An-Nour, Al-Qalamoun, Al Bunyan As-Sabi’, Az-Za’im, and Ar-Rahma.

Solidarity

In cooperation with Union of Relief and Development Associations, QC implemented the project in Lebanon to secure healthy food for 1,650 Syrian refugees in Arsal. It was implemented to strengthen the concept of solidarity and to avoid any possible future risks that would result from food shortages.

As always, QC works hard to offer and secure food for the Syrian people, especially those who are in Lebanon; the targeted category of this project.

QC prioritizes the field of food because of its importance. It is one of the most fundamental challenges faced by the refugees and displaced people. Therefore, QC has made it a priority for the relief projects it implements for the Syrian people.

Dignified Life

He emphasized on the fact that QC prioritized refugees-related relief projects since they need such projects the most. “Refugees need our help. They need our full support,” said he.

He added that QC will exert more efforts to respond to the humanitarian causes which need help the most. It will do so in cooperation with all of the partners, and the parties interested in the affairs of refugees and displaced Syrians in Syria.
