Qatar Charity signs MoU with agriculture ministry, distributes relief aid in Sri Lanka

Qatar Charity (QC), through its office in Colombo, Sri Lanka, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries to assist small-scale farmers in enhancing agricultural practices and increasing their incomes. Additionally, it distributed 2,500 food packages to families impacted by natural disasters across various regions of the country. This comes as part of Qatar Charity’s efforts to enhance food security and ease the financial pressures on vulnerable families in Sri Lanka.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Mahmoud Abu Khalifa, Director of Qatar Charity’s Office in Sri Lanka, and Janaka Dharmakeerthi, secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries. The agreement includes funding for a project to distribute agricultural fertilizers to approximately 3,500 farmers. These fertilizers will be distributed across several Sri Lankan provinces known for their agricultural activity in the coming period.

Besides, Qatar Charity has distributed food packages to families in need and those affected by natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides. These packages, containing essential food items, were distributed in coordination with the National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations in Sri Lanka to ensure they reach the most vulnerable groups.

On this occasion, Mr. Sanjeewa Wimalagunarathna, Director General of the National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations, emphasized the significance of this project, which addresses the real needs of the beneficiary families amidst the challenging living conditions and the economic crisis that affected the country.

He noted that each food package is designed to meet the needs of beneficiary families for an entire month. He also expressed his appreciation to Qatar Charity for its impactful contribution to addressing humanitarian and developmental needs across various sectors, benefiting all sections of Sri Lankan society.

For his part, Mr. Janaka Kumara, Secretary of the Colombo District, praised Qatar Charity for its timely intervention in aiding families displaced by natural disasters.

In response, the beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the food aid provided by Qatar Charity amid their struggles with poverty and displacement. Mrs. Sudarshana Fonseka said, “I felt immense joy upon receiving the large and diverse food package. It will help us prepare nutritious meals for our children and ease the burden of our difficult living conditions.”
