Doha, Qatar – November 24, 2024
Qatar Charity (QC), with the support of benefactors in Qatar, has installed 160 deep tube wells in four coastal districts of Bangladesh, benefiting 12,000 people. The project is part of Qatar Charity’s efforts to provide safe drinking water worldwide.
This initiative comes in response to the pressing need for safe drinking water in a region suffering from saline and contaminated surface water. It aims to alleviate the hardships of local communities and provide a clean water source that promotes health and well-being.
The districts where the deep tube wells were installed include Barguna, Satkhira, Barisal, and Jhalokati. In these districts, the local communities face a harsh reality due to the salinity and pollution of surface water sources. Many residents previously had no choice but to rely on unsafe water, leading to several health issues, including waterborne diseases.
Beyond health benefits, the project has also boosted local economies. Access to clean water has enabled families to grow kitchen gardens, enhancing nutrition and food security. This ripple effect underscores the transformative impact of clean water in improving overall community well-being.
Local beneficiaries have expressed profound gratitude for the project. Nasima Begum, a beneficiary of Barisal, shared her relief: “Before the wells were installed, we had to travel long distances to fetch water. Now, we have access to clean water, which has improved our health and made our daily lives much easier.”
Mostafa Islam, a beneficiary of Satkhira, said, “The salinity of the surface water made it impossible for us to drink or even cook. With these new tube wells, we can finally enjoy fresh water. This has changed our lives. My family can focus on farming and education instead of worrying about where to find water.”
The local authorities have also expressed their satisfaction with the initiative. Mr. Moniruzzaman, a government official of Barisal, emphasized the importance of this project, stating “Access to clean water is fundamental to our community’s health and development. The installation of these wells has not only provided immediate relief but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of our water resources.”
It is worth mentioning that over the last 10 years, Qatar Charity has implemented 19,152 WASH projects in many parts of Bangladesh, especially in coastal districts, benefitting more than 1.5 million people.
