Many scholars and scientists consider sanitation as one of humankind's tremendous achievements in the twentieth century because it has a significant impact on people’s health and the environment's safety. However, there are still many communities worldwide with no sanitation facilities, causing deadly diseases and epidemics. With Qatar Charity's intervention, 100% of Bihari Colony population has now improved sanitation and safe access to toilets and safe drinking water. Out of 227 families in the village, only 117 families had toilets in their homes before Qatar Charity's intervention in partnership with UNICEF. Besides, the marginalized community did not have a proper drainage system for domestic liquid waste which exacerbated their sanitation and hygiene challenges. Qatar Charity Response The project mainly focused on establishing facilities to bring access to clean water suitable for human consumption, strengthen cooperation, build toilets at a household level, and educate and mobilize the local communities for self-help and resilience. Significant WASH Project With assistance from Qatar Charity, the local communities prepared ‘Community Action Plan for WASH’ and the ‘School Action Plan for WASH’ to enable the local folks to understand and draw better implementation plans. Under the ASWA Project, Qatar Charity, in partnership with UNICEF, completed the construction of 14500 household and school toilets in Shorkot Tehsil while in the locality of Rakh Kotla, 110 household latrines were constructed. Because of this intervention, the government declared Rakh Kotlaas a 100 % open defecation free village. In addition, Qatar Charity has built 50 WASH projects in the Bihari Lalla.
