About Mali

The Republic of Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa, bordered by Algeria to the north, Niger to the east, and Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso to the west and south. Its capital city is Bamako. Mali gained independence from France in 1960. The northern part of the country is largely desert (Sahara), while the southern region, where most of the population lives, is crossed by the Niger River. Mali has a rich cultural and historical heritage, once home to powerful empires such as Ghana, Mali, and Songhai, and to historic cities like Timbuktu, known for Islamic scholarship. Since 2012, the country has faced a serious security crisis due to armed conflicts and the presence of terrorist groups in the north and center.
