About Djibouti
It is officially called the Republic of Djibouti, and it is an Arab country that is a member of the League of Arab States and the African Union. It is located in the Horn of Africa, on the western shore of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and it is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west, south and Somalia to the southeast, while it looks east to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. On the opposite side, across the Red Sea in the Arabian Peninsula, there is Yemen, whereas its coasts are about 20 km from Djibouti.
The area of Djibouti is estimated to be only 23,200 km2, while its population is estimated at about 1,000,000. Its capital is the city of Djibouti.
The population of Djibouti is divided into two main ethnic groups, namely the ethnic of “Afar” and Somali Arabic, in addition to ethnicities of European descent, Arabs and Ethiopians.
The official language in Djibouti is French, but the Somali language remains widely spoken, followed by Afar along with Arabic. Most of the Djiboutians live in cities, and the rest depend on agriculture and grazing.
