Qatar Charity began its interventions in Mauritania in the 1990s, through civil society organisations, as a contribution to the development efforts there. In 2007, QC opened an of ce in Nouakchott, the capital city, and implemented a number projects. focusing on: improving water and sanitation, health and education; income-generating activities; and construction, QC also implemented relief interventions by providing direct support to the refugees in eastern Mauritania, including the provision of drinkable water for the villages and rural communities affected by drought. Medical convoys were organised to provide medical care to needy patients in emergency situations in urban centres, villages and Bedouin gatherings in the desert.

About Mauritania

Mauritania is located in West Africa, in the western part of the coastal desert group, It occupies a total surface area of 1,030,700 sq. km. The country is bordered by Morocco to the north-west, Al- geria to the north east, Mali to the south east, Senegal to the south west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The population of Mauritania is estimated at 3,984,000. It is classi ed amongst the poor and heavily indebted countries. and is ranked 161st out of 187 countries in the 2014 UNDP Human Development Index. Mauritania is characterised by a harsh environment and was deeply affected by the drought which hit the country in the 1970s. Since early 2012, the county has also been affected by war in northern Mali.
